There have been many misconceptions about the origin of Sanatan Dharma and even today people do not have accurate information about its beginning. Some people claim that Sanatan Dharma is 12,000 years old, while others believe that it is 90,000 years old. The real age of Sanatana Dharma will be revealed in this article, so keep reading to know more.
Sanatan Dharma’s Age
Some people consider Sanatan Dharma to be 12,000 years old, while some people consider it to be 90,000 years old. However, the truth is that Sanatana Dharma is like a clock that starts afresh with each cycle of creation. Just as the position of the Sun keeps changing from sunrise to sunset, similarly the timeline of Sanatan Dharma keeps changing in different eras from Satya Yuga to Dwapar Yuga.
It is possible that Sanatana Dharma may become extinct with the end of the present era (Kaliyuga) and the universe, but it is certain that it will reappear with the beginning of a new cosmic cycle. This is why no one has been able to determine the exact beginning of Sanatana Dharma, nor will they be able to, because the entire universe already existed before its creation, being inherent in the essence of Lord Hari.
According to the scriptures: No one can definitely answer when Sanatan Dharma started because the origin of the world and the religion is not known exactly. According to the Puranas and some Hindu scriptures, Sanatan Dharma is said to be about 90,000 years old.
According to History: If we examine the history of the Indus Valley Civilization we find evidence that Hinduism existed 12,000 years ago. Many Hindu symbols have been discovered during excavations in the Indus Valley, confirming that Hinduism was prevalent 12,000 years ago. Although the Indus Valley Civilization is very ancient and still exists, it was completely destroyed.
The Indus Valley Civilization is believed to have declined around 1800 BC. It is said that this civilization was quite vast and, if measured by today’s standards, was bigger than many countries. Only 1,500 sites have been discovered so far. Thus, it is not wrong to say that Hinduism is very old, and it is possible that Hinduism was the only religion at that time, or there may have been other religions as well. This remains a mystery.
The First Person in the World
According to Matsya Purana, the first person on earth was Manu. Manu was not born through any other being, that is why he is called Swayambhu Manu. Later Manu performed rigorous penance and got a wife named Ananti, after which the birth of human beings began. The population increased with time. According to Matsya Purana, we all are descendants of Manu and Ananti.
The Hindu scriptures and texts such as the Bhagavad Gita contain up to 70% insights that often align with contemporary understanding. Hinduism is considered to be a very sacred religion that provides proper guidance for relationships. According to Matsya Purana, Manu was the first human being on this earth who initiated its creation and established a new world where people started fulfilling their duties.
These are ancient things, but since then many civilizations have risen and fallen. However, Sanatan Dharma has persisted in every age. If we consider some aspects of the present Kaliyuga, we see that many civilizations were destroyed during this period. It is difficult to estimate how old the Harappan civilization was or what civilizations existed before it. Our present civilization is also in question, and its future and the emergence of subsequent civilizations are unknown. Similarly, it is also impossible to predict which religion will emerge next.
Sanatan Dharma is also called Vedic religion. Vedic religion provides the path to spiritual knowledge by realizing that God truly exists and that moksha (liberation) is the ultimate goal. Sanatana is described as the eternal truth that exists from time immemorial and has no end. Sanatan refers to this eternal truth.
